Improving Your Child’s Spelling Skills

For most children, learning to spell is incredibly frustrating, especially if it’s a new word. While it’s normal for your preschooler to have some spelling difficulty, if we don’t take steps to correct these mistakes, it’s not going to improve.

The Green House Preschool and Kindergarten, Inc. does everything to teach youngsters how to properly spell out words, but parents also have a role to play. This is so that the child will retain and improve on the lesson they learned from their Preschool in New Jersey.

So we’re going to talk about a few tips on how to improve your child’s spelling ability at home:

  • Mastering Dolch words – Dolch words, or sight words, are the words usually sent home by your child’s kindergarten in Fort Lee, New Jersey. These are frequently used words in the English language. Some examples of sight words are: an, all, can, called, long, little, made, many, and most.
  • Help them recognize word families – Once your child masters a word, give them a list of other words that end with the same letters. For example: train, chain, and brain.
  • Help them memorize spelling rules – Once your child masters the spelling rules, they will be able to remember how words are spelled and even catch their misspelled words more easily.
  • Practice – After every lesson, what’s important is that your child practices everything that they learned. This can dramatically increase their spelling mastery.
